Theta Theta Chapter History

The story of Theta-Theta at Ferris State University starts out at Central Michigan University where Jeremy “Bear” Schaffer became a Brother of the Delta Alpha Chapter. The next year Jeremy decided to leave Central Michigan and enroll at Ferris State University to pursue a degree in the Plastics program. Once Jeremy enrolled at Ferris State he took a look at the Greek system and found that Ferris State did not have a Sigma Pi Chapter. Determined to start his own Sigma Pi Chapter Jeremy decided to start recruiting other gentleman to help him start Tau Phi Delta, an under-ground fraternity that was created before Sigma Pi. Jeremy had recruited over fifteen guys and the under-ground fraternity Tau Phi Delta was started at Ferris State University.

Tau Phi Delta was growing strong and Jeremy was hoping to form a colony of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Ferris State University . Jeremy had gathered all the gentlemen to inform them that they need to have over 20 gentlemen to become a colony of Sigma Pi. The next semester went by and some of the gentlemen graduated or moved on, and Tau Phi Delta had decreased in size. In March of 1999, Tau Phi Delta had reached its goal of recruiting over 20 members and had become a colony of Sigma Pi. Everyone was excited to begin the next step in becoming a Chapter of Sigma Pi.

The start of the next semester did not start out well for the colony of Sigma Pi at Ferris State . The gentleman had lost their house and many of the members were living in apartment complexes instead of houses. Some members had graduated and a new executive council was in place to make the jump from colony to Chapter. The new council was determined to achieve its goal and the first step was to set-up a regular meeting schedule. The group decided to hold the meetings at the apartment complex where many of its members lived. This did not work out well for the colony and the result was a decline in the number of active members. The executive council determined not to fail, and decided they needed to take the next step and secure proper house for the coming fall of 2001. Four members of the colony went ahead and signed a lease on a house close to campus. They knew by having this house that it provided them a better opportunity to reach out and recruit the freshman class. Thus 409 Michigan became the new Sigma Pi Colony house. To achieve National and Intra-Fraternity recognition, the group needed to achieve 50 members.

The fall semester of 2001 came, and so did the freshman, sophomores, juniors and even seniors whom were interested in becoming a member of the Sigma Pi colony. Recruitment went very well for the colony that fall and they had recruited eight members to join Sigma Pi. This group boosted the colonies numbers back to 20 members where they had started when they were first colonized. The spring semester of 2002 came and the colony was looking to further grow its numbers to reach that goal of fifty. Spring semester brought another new eight members and renewed hope that they would become a Chapter of Sigma Pi. The colony was becoming recognized among other Greek organizations and students. The colony was poised to break out and become a force on the Ferris State University . The fall semester of 2002 was the break semester for the colony as the colony added a record twenty new members and further showed they were determined to become a Chapter.

The colony had grown to 40 members strong and Sigma Pi informed the colony that they would be accepted to complete an application for acceptance into the ways of Sigma Pi. The petition to charter which declared that the Ferris State Colony of Sigma Pi was educated in the history of the National Fraternity along with member profiles had to be completed prior to receiving National Recognition. The colony spent the next spring working on the application, recruiting a new generation of leaders, along with preparing the members for a test over the history of Sigma Pi.

On February 3 rd , 2003 the Grand Council of Sigma Pi Fraternity met in an official voting ceremony and unanimously approved the Ferris State Colony of Sigma Pi's petition to charter. So it was to be that on March 29 th , 2003 the Theta-Theta Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity would be a fully chartered Chapter, and would join the Intra-Fraternity Council and Greek Community at Ferris State University . The members finally achieved their goal of becoming a Chapter although they knew the task of being a successful addition to the Greek community had just started for them at Ferris State University.

One year after Chartering, the Theta-Theta Chapter was put on suspension for FIPG violation of a common source alcohol violation. The suspension led to an aggressive risk management action plan, and restricted members from social activities for 2 semesters. While this social suspension was in effect the Chapter focused on improving its infrastructure, and developed a new approach to social endeavors. While un-able to participate in Greek events the membership dropped below 35.

When the social restrictions were removed, the Chapter achieved the largest pledge class on campus, and looked forward to progressing as the Greek Leaders on campus. Another set back ensued when the Chapter was cited with hazing allegations. After investigation the Michigan State Police found there to be insufficient evidence in support of these allegations, however the chapter was found responsible for violating risk management policies. With the help of Dave Edwards from the National Head Quarters the Chapter developed an action plan, and changed the new member education program. Theta-Theta was under a one year alcohol suspension and was restricted to limited social activity. This action plan and new mentality of the Chapter enlightened the group to fulfill their obligation and truly become the Generation of Leaders.

In September 2005, the executive board had the National and IFC restrictions released and Theta-Theta was back and fully functioning. With the new focus and dedication to improve the Chapter's brotherhood, grades, alumni support, and risk management, the Chapter was nominated for 5-star recognition. The Chapter's new dedication was not unnoticed as they received awards for, Diversity, Most Improved Chapter, Greek Organization of the Year, FSU Spirit Award, Greek Games Winner, and Overall Greek Week Winners for the 2005-2006 academic year.

Theta Theta continues to develop and challenge its membership to uphold the responsibilities and obligations of Sigma Pi. Through educational programming, and responsible social activities Theta-Theta continues to succeed as the Greek leader at Ferris State University . Today Sigma Pi is still growing strong on the Ferris State campus and always looking for ways to better the community and campus. This is all done while continually developing its members for alumnus status and post graduation success.
